OOOh! NIce little review of Jody Rogac’s exhibition PICTURES on FEATURE SHOOT.
Jody Rogac’s portraits are soft in color and light but strong in emotional connectivity. Her recent exhibition “Pictures” at Ed. Varie in New York was a careful selection of sensitive portraits, each one a straightforward record of the interaction between photographer and subject. The images Rogac included in the show have a beautiful simplicity of form in common, an evenness of light, and a palette of chromatic grays mixed with skin tones. This agreeable grisaille wash is set off by the addition of monochrome images to the edit, which are equally careful of tonality. Rogac explained her elegant approach to me very earnestly, in just a few words- “I think a good portrait is one where the photographer has approached their subject gracefully and with respect.”

Time for new flowers. Today is the last day of Tyler Healy, Dean Levin and Evan Robarts exhibition. Gallery open til 5!
As one of the great songwriters of his generation, Bill Callahan remains a mythic figure. Whether in his earlier work as Smog or his more recent incarnation (under his given name), Callahan’s music expresses a kind of privacy that is precious because it’s so rare.
In 2008, Chris Taylor sent an unsolicited email to record label Drag City with a proposal: a book of photographs of and around Bill Callahan. Taylor found himself driving 658 miles from his home in Victoria, B.C. to meet Callahan and discuss the idea: that he would travel to Callahan’s home in Austin, TX and photograph him every other day for a month.
A book of photos titled The Life and Times of William Callahan is the result of his time in Austin, and is as much a portrait of Callahan as any of Callahan’s songs. Shirts, walls, and trees seem to have faces, but as with people (Callahan in this case) their depths and secrets remain hidden, barely hinted at by their features.
